This event followed up on an earlier workshop hosted in March, in collaboration with Dr. Meg Holden from Simon Fraser University. A similar format that included professional and scholarly panelists from TU Dortmund, the Institute of Regional and Urban Development (ILS), the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development, the Ruhr Regional Association, the Emschergenossenschaft and the municipalities of Dortmund, Essen and Dinslaken allowed participants to learn about how resilience is received or considered at local and regional levels in Germany. Moreover, Canadian and German students also presented their own research on comparative planning and resilience in Metro Vancouver and the Rhein-Ruhr region.
As a part of this event, Canadian guests and local participants also visited with Die Urbanisten in Dortmund and the City of Duisburg for specific site visits featuring resilience relevant initiatives. To close the event and also anticipate Canada Day on July 1st, Dr. Byron Miller from the University of Calgary shared anecdotes from urban development in Calgary at the invitation of Dr. Ludger Basten and the Association for Canadian Studies in German-speaking Countries (GKS).
