The settlement area of around 40 ha had been settled for centuries before the new planning law of 1968 drew a line around it and declared it agricultural land, thus making the settlement illegal. Since then, the area has turned into a typical agglomeration periphery including housing, its local craft heritage of sand mining and traditional bamboo graft woods, but also junk dealers or car dealers. It has never been connected to fresh water or sewer infrastructure. The area is cut apart by a speedway, and due to being situated on a slope offers a spectacular view across the Kyoto-Osaka agglomeration area. It is part of several cultural touristic trails. The task is to develop a master plan for the soft conversion of the area towards a sustainable and resilient community included into the greenbelt of one of the oldest cultural landscapes in the world.
The summer academy is followed by an excursion including the Kansai metropolitan area (ca. 17 million inhabitants). It also offers excursions to the historic city of Kyoto and its merchant houses, the metropolis Osaka with its emphasis on water-oriented urban renaissance and housing issues, to the Inner Japanese Sea area with soft development strategies for peripheral areas as well as further topics in urban planning. These excursions are supported by local planning academics and practice experts. The language of the summer academy is English.
The LODE_PORT summer academy is dedicated to dealing with regional and urban design and management policy in the context of the physical regeneration of urban and suburban areas with differing dynamics of growth and/or shrinkage, brownfield regeneration and the integration of landscape into the urbanized areas. The approach focuses on the activation for new forms of local urban and suburban life within the last three decades. A special emphasis is put on planning tools and the management of post-industrial transformation and its current developments and formats. The students learn about the state of art of the integrative approach of the scientific and analytic background, a stakeholder-oriented communicative planning and theory base, practice-oriented settlement concepts.
The international program is co-developed together with our Japanese partners and the participating students work in mixed project teams. Participants will receive an international participation certificate. Total cost of the two-week program is estimated around 1.500 EUR. It is also possible to participate in the one-week long workshop only.
